The "Hunt of the Unicorn" often referred to as the "Unicorn Tapestries is a series of 7 tapestries dating from 1495-1505. The tapestries show a group of noblemen and hunters in pursuit of a unicorn. Much of the tapestries history is disputed and there are many theories about their original purpose however it seems likely they were commisioned by Anne of Brittany to celebrate her marriage to Charles VIII King of France. The 2 major interpretations of the tapestries hinge on Pagan and Christian symbolism. The Pagan interpretation focuses on the medieval lore of bequiled lovers where as the Christian writings interpret the Unicorn and it's death as "The Passions of Christ." The Unicorn has long been interpreted as a symbol of Christ by Christian writers. The original myths surrounding "The Hunt of the Unicorn" refer to a beast that can only be tamed by a virgin maiden. Subsequently, Christian scholars translate this into an allegory for Christ's relationship with the "Virgin Mary." The original tapestries were purchase by John D Rockefeller Jr from France for 1 million dollars in the 1920's and donated to the Metropolitan Musuem of Art in New York City. They are housed in the Cloisters Musuem in NYC. Books and movies have been based on these Tapestries. Preowned, excellent condition from a smoke free pet free home. "La Licorne Captive"-the final tapestry features The Captured Unicorn alive and fenced in. This tapestry is a work of art, traditionally woven according to jacquard techniques invented in the 18th century. Lined and tunneled for hanging. Made in France. Breathtaking and sure to enhance the beauty of your home.... Measures: 37× 30" (96 × 76 cm) Estimate
